Trois Mamelles

IMG_0638

Strictly speaking, it should be 1 Mamelle because we climbed only one of the 3 breasts...

The last time I had climbed a mountain was Corps de Garde, last year. Hence 2 months ago, thanks to the GPS tracks provided by fitsy.com, I ventured towards my first trek of 2012.

Graduation

IMG_1433

In every university student’s life, at the end of his studies, there comes a day when everything comes together. A day when he can reap the rewards of nights spent Googling assignments, of days spent in the library copying homework and of the stress due to last-minute revisions. A day when his parents are proud of him. Graduation day.

Well, enough of hyperbole, here’s my account of my graduation at UOM.

Montagne des Signaux at night

IMG_1296

The last time I climbed Signal Mountain, I said I would be back for another attempt at sunset, with a better camera. Only this time, I had two new cameras to test; my S100 and another one with a 41MP sensor

Mauritius South-East Road Trip - Part 2

DSCN6904

In the Part 1, we had left Pont Naturel and were heading towards Plaine Magnien. Due to our tight schedule, we couldn’t visit places like Le Bouchon, La Cambuse, Mon Desert Mon Tresor and the alien-built Mauritian Pyramids.

En route, we were debating where to have lunch. More specifically, which was the better seaside between Blue Bay & Le Chaland. As you would expect, we did this properly and...

Mauritius South-East Road Trip - Part 1

A month ago, I took to the roads to visit the South-East part of Mauritius.

In the previous road trip, we had stopped at Rivière des Anguilles and gone further South towards Souillac & then drove till the West coast. This time though, we planned to go East from Rivière des Anguilles...

Port Louis in miniature

Since I last climbed Montagne des Signaux, I’ve been experimenting with tilt-shift photography through post-processing, more specifically miniature faking.

& the best thing is that you don’t need to be a pro photographer to do this. ;)

44th

12th_2012_1

Today, we are celebrating the 44th Independence day of Mauritius – 44 years have passed since we got independence from Britain and 20 years since we are a Republic. On the media, Facebook and Twitter, you’ll see everyone wishing themselves a happy Independence day or stating that they are proud to be Mauritian… should we really be proud?

Montagne des Signaux

DSCN1195

Le Morne de la Découverte, now known as Signal Mountain or Montagne des Signaux, stands at 323m (1058 ft) above Port Louis. It got its name from the French era signal-post built on the summit to guide the ships in harbour and which has now been replaced by an antenna farm.

Of all Mauritian mountains, Signal Mountain is the easiest to climb. Mainly, because it has a tarred road that goes up to the summit, which can be done on foot or in a vehicle.

So, how easy can it be?

After accomplishing the pilgrimage to Ganga Talao, it is now time to celebrate the great night of Shiva at the temple, the Maheswarnath Mandir in Triolet.

The annual pilgrimage to Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) for the festival of Maha Shivratri. The weather conditions were exactly the same as last year, so the photos look very similar.

RCPL

Vitae Non Scholae Discendum - Learn for life, not for school.

The Royal College Port Louis, circa 2005-2006.

This a follow-up to the post on my blog. The main reason is because the related photos have been lost to the servers of Flickr with its 200-photo limit on free accounts. Most of the following photos are the original ones taken by my first camera - the much-maligned HP 635 - while I was in my final year at RCPL.

Corps de Garde

DSCN7527

Towering above the towns of Rose Hill & Quatre Bornes is Corps de Garde, which at 720m, is the 5th highest mountain in Mauritius. After conquering Le Pouce, Lion Mountain & the Black River Peak, I was looking forward to my last hike of 2011 on a mountain with a very comfortable slope & a nearly flat summit.

How hard can it be?
