Saw that thing a couple of times at home. I'm not sure about the ID. In a local documentary I saw something like that with french name "charançon" and they said it attacked sugar cane plants. Googled a bit, saw a cane beetle, Dermolepida albohirtum, which is native to Auatralia (according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cane_beetle).
